Marengo, Iowa 52301
Though Marengo was not officially incorporated until July 1859, it has served as the county seat of Iowa County since 1845. Named after the plains of 'Marengo' in Italy where Napoleon won a great battle from the Austrian troops, the unique charm of Marengo stems from the natural beauty of the Iowa River Valley, its historical architecture and small-town values.
Along the trails and river banks of the Iowa River, one can see a wide variety of wildlife including bald eagles, hawks, songbirds, amphibians, reptiles, butterflies, dragonflies and more. Wildflowers provide cover, food and natural beauty to the area.
When touring Marengo, visitors are welcome to go through the Iowa County Courthouse. The current courthouse was completed in 1893 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in June of 1980. Marengo's Pioneer Heritage Museum is a museum complex covering half a city block. Portraying life from the mid 1800s, items in the museum include an 1861 log house, an 1856 cabin, a 1930 filling station and an 1861 Rock Island depot. Also found on site is the Historical Resource Library that provides invaluable information about the history of Iowa County and its families.
Marengo is the home of the Iowa Valley Tigers. With an enrollment of approximately 650 students who live in and around Marengo, the Community School District is strongly supported by the parents and the community. The district provides quality education for students in grades pre-k through high school. With a successful athletic program, Iowa Valley offers sports for both boys and girls, including: baseball and softball, football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, golf and track.
Even though some would say Marengo is a small rural town, the residents enjoy the amenities of a larger community. Hardware and grocery stores adequately accommodate the day-to-day needs of the local residents. Healthcare services include a full-service hospital and a family medical clinic that supports inpatient and outpatient procedures, internal medicine, pediatrics and women's health. In addition to medical services, optometry and dental are offered. Seniors have several options that support their needs including assisted living and nursing home facilities.
In 2009, Marengo celebrated its sesquicentennial. With over 150 years here and gone, Marengo looks forward to its future and the next 150 years.
