MARENGO RECREATION COMMISSION
The city square park, located in the 100 block between East Main Street and East Washington Street, has two recently remodeled shelter houses (perfect for get-togethers); various playground equipment; an old fashioned bandstand; and a beautifully restored fountain. During the summer, the City "celebrates summer" with various activities, games, and entertainment on the third Friday of each month. During the holiday season, the park is ablaze with lights and decorations as various groups "adopt" and decorate trees.
Gateway Park & Preserve, located at the north end of Court Avenue, occupies a portion of the southern bank of the Iowa River. The 131 acre site includes a 41-acre lake and a 12-acre pong which were created through the excavation of sand and gravel for a concrete business. The Iowa County Conservation Board purchased the property in 2001; it is jointly maintained by both the City and the County. The park is open for fishing and boating activity with easy access to the Iowa River. The Park & Preserve is also home to a pair of American Bald Eagles. An arboretum is in the development process, thanks to the many donations and volunteers. Biking and hiking trails are located along the river's levy.
Marengo Municipal Swimming Pool is located at 1277 Franklin Avenue. The pool is open to the public from noon to 7:00 p.m. seven days from Memorial Day weekend to shortly before school starts in August. Daily pool announcements can be heard by calling 642-5676.
