Marengo Parks
Marengo is home to three parks;
the city square park located in the 100 block between East Main Street
and East Washington Street, the Lions' Park, located at 1350
Eastern Avenue, and the Gateway Park & Preserve, located at the
north end of Court Avenue.
The city square park boasts two recently remodeled shelter hosues,
various playground equipment, and old-fashioned bandstand, and a
beautifully restored fountain. During the holiday season, you
will find the park ablaze with the Christmas lights as several groups
"adopt" and decorate trees.
The Lions' Park is home to the
MRC ball diamonds, soccer fields, flag football fields, a shelter
house, and concession stand (where you can savor the taste of the best
River Dogs in the area!)
In addition to the three shelter houses mentioned, the City also owns a
shelter house located near the Iowa Valley athletic fields.
Reservations for any of the shelter houses can be made by phoning City
Hall at (319) 642-3232.
Gateway Park & Preserve, located at the northern edge of Marengo,
occupies a portion of the southern bank of the Iowa River. The
131 acre site includes a 41-acre lake and a 12-acre pond which were
created through the excavation of sand and gravel for a concrete
business. The Iowa County Conservation Board purchased the
property from the concrete business in 2001, and it is jointly
maintained by the City of Marengo and Iowa County. The park is
currently open for fishing activity and contains a boat ramp for access
to the Iowa River, along with a bird viewing tower. The arboretum
continues to develop, thanks to many donations and volunteers.
Future plans for the park include bioswales, a childrens' water gard,
wetlands preservation and restoration, education gardens, a lakeside
pavillion, a memorial pavillion, a wedidng pavillion, picnic area, and
a welcome center. Biking and hiking trails are located along the
river's levy. For further information, you can access the Gateway Park and Preserve
Master Plan (pdf format).
Marengo Pool
The Marengo Muncipal Swimming Pool is located at
1277 Franklyn Avenue. The pool typically opens Memorial Day
weekend and closes shortly before school starts.
