ATTENTION All City of Marengo Water Users We Need your input for the mandatory EPA Lead and Copper Service Line Report
All public water service providers are currently required to gather information and submit the city’s EPA Lead and Copper report by October 16, 2024. This is a rule and regulation enforced by the EPA to obtain a better understanding of the materials being used for the customer’s water line that runs from the main to the meter.
The city will need to report the type of service lines for ALL properties connected to the city’s public water supply, regardless of ownership status. This does not mean service lines need to be replaced by the deadline, only identified. At a minimum, the city will need to report if the service lines are classified as lead, galvanized, non-lead or unknown.
YOUR PARTICIPATION IS GREATLY APPRECIATED AS BOTH TIME & COST SAVINGS MEASURES! In an effort to better manage resources and costs, the city is asking for help from residents and business owners to self-identify their property’s private service line material. As a result, a Lead and Copper Service Line Survey has been created to gather all required information.
For residents who want to submit their survey information online, click HERE.
Persons may also pickup a paper copy at City Hall, 153 E. Main Street, or at the Marengo Public Library, 235 E. Hilton . You may also request that a copy of the survey to be sent to your home by calling 319-642-3232. If you have any questions, please contact City Hall at 319-642-3232.
How do I know what type of piping I have? The most easily accessible location to view and determine the water service material type is at the water meter inside your building. The water meter is typically located in the basement or utility room of a building.
Types of Water Service Pipes Follow the guidance below or contact a licensed plumber to determine the material of your water pipes. To identify the material of your service pipe on private property, check your household water service connection, typically located in the basement. 1. Lead Pipes- The pipe is soft, easily scraped silver, and a magnet does not stick to lead. 2. Galvanized Steel- If your pipes have a strong silver gray color and attract a magnet they are galvanized steel. 3. Copper Pipes- If the scrapped area is copper in color, like a penny your service line is copper. 4. Polyethylene Pipes- Flexible and sometimes curved. Typically, blue or black. 5. If unknown, please mark unknown and someone will schedule a time to check your pipe material.
